A woman is kneeled over a vast sand dune. Behind her is a deep blue sky. The woman is wearing red pants and tan sweater. She has on sunglasses and her light brown hair is in a ponytail.

Cara Ryan, PhD

Hello!

I am a cultural and medical anthropologist who uses my training and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods to understand and contextualize complex human-centered problems and then propose actionable solutions. My research and professional experience spans academia, disability, health, government, and nonprofits in the US and France. I speak English (my native language) and French.

My academic research explored autism in adulthood in both the U.S. and France. My PhD dissertation (NYU, 2023) was an ethnographic analysis of l’Université Aspie-Friendly (The Aspie-Friendly University), an innovative project aimed at making the entire French public university system inclusive for students with autism spectrum conditions. The initiative is an official part of the French government’s National Autism Strategy

My research has been published in  Medical Anthropology, Somatosphere, Platypus, and in edited volumes. I have presented my work at numerous conferences in both North America and Europe. I am currently an affiliated researcher with the PROJEKT Design and Social Innovation Laboratory at the University of Nîmes in Nîmes, France.

My expertise lies in observing social phenomena, empathizing with others, asking the right questions of my interlocutors, elevating their voices, analyzing data, and synthesizing my findings for various stakeholders.
